Eliminating Barriers to Racial Equity

Elmont Community Housing Summit Report, November 2025

On November 22, 2025, ERASE Racism hosted the Elmont Housing Summit, in collaboration with Assembly Member Solages and sponsored by LIBOR, bringing together residents, advocates, housing practitioners, and community leaders to discuss solutions to Elmont's most pressing housing challenges. We had 52 attendees from the community. The summit focused on affordability, countering housing discrimination, land use and zoning, and pathways to expand diverse housing options in communities in the region.

The program featured expert panelists and partner organizations, including representatives from the Long Island Housing Coalition, Regional Plan Association, Long Island Housing Partnership, Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, CDLI, and local practitioners who shared insights on zoning, homeownership access, rental assistance, senior housing needs, and discrimination and issues that continue to affect families in Elmont and beyond.

Community members also participated in a lively discussion, during which they expressed their main concerns for Elmont, which spanned from traffic and environmental concerns, to affordable housing for young professionals and seniors who wish to remain in the neighborhood. These community discussions were solutions-oriented, underpinning shared core values like safety and dignity.

ERASE Racism was grateful for Assembly Member Michaelle Solages's leadership, which ensured that the summit centered the lived experiences of Elmont residents.

The event also included resource tables and one-on-one support for residents, offering information on homeownership programs, housing counseling, discrimination reporting, rental assistance, and other issues identified by residents.

The strong turnout and enthusiastic participation demonstrated the importance of events like this summit and the need to increase access to resources for community members, facilitating meaningful community discussions, and working together on developing a common vision for the community.

The Elmont Housing Summit is part of ERASE Racism’s broader work to advance access to housing, dismantle systemic barriers and discrimination, and support community-driven solutions across Long Island. More regional convenings and capacity-building initiatives are planned for 2026 as we continue this important work in partnership with local leaders, organizations, and residents.
