ERASE Racism Applauds Huntington Town Council for Approving Melville Town Center Plan
Syosset, NY – December 12, 2024 – Laura Harding, President of ERASE Racism, issued the following statement today praising the Huntington Town Council for approving the Melville Town Center Plan:
“The Huntington Town Council approved the Melville Town Center Plan on December 10 by a vote of three to one, with one abstention. This is a crucial step forward for Long Island and serves as a model for other communities in the region.
The Plan establishes an overlay zone that allows for the replacement of underutilized office buildings with a vibrant and walkable downtown area that includes housing, with affordable options. Up to 1500 apartments would be permitted, with 300 of them designated as affordable.
With this decision, Huntington is leading the way for Long Island. The town is taking the important and necessary action to revitalize its economy, address the housing crisis, and provide much-needed affordable housing. It is time for other towns in the region to adopt this model and expand upon it.”
