During more than a decade at Teach For America, where she was Managing Director of Digital Strategy and Managing Director of the Career Center, she led digital strategy, communications, and operational initiatives reaching 60,000+ stakeholders in support of educational equity. She built digital platforms serving tens of thousands of TFA alumni and corps members, led cross-functional teams, and helped translate ambitious goals into actionable plans and effective execution.

merica.org, alumni websites, email newsletters, and social channels. She also managed staff and integrated equity-centered practices into platform design, content development, and team operations.

Growing up in Uniondale and now raising her family in Garden City, she has seen first-hand how long-standing patterns of racism and segregation continue to perpetuate disparities in access to housing, education, and opportunity across Long Island communities.. That perspective has informed her lifelong commitment to advancing equity. As a Uniondale resident, she co-founded the Uniondale Foundation for Educational Excellence to expand opportunities and resources for Uniondale students and educators. She served as the Foundation’s President from 2006 to 2012, helping mobilize community support through three fundraising galas attended by more than 250 guests each and featuring nationally recognized speakers, including Cornel West, Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Chuck D.

Other civic engagements include serving as Co-Chair of the Apollo Theater’s Young Patrons (2014–2017); as Co-President, Vice President of Special Events, and NYC Chapter Delegate for the Ron Brown Scholar Alumni Association (2014–2018), as a member of the Advisory Board of the John J. Byrne Community Center (2023–present), and as a member of the Garden City PTA’s Digital Citizenship Committee (2025–present).

Throughout her career, Kara has sought to advance equity and inclusion through both professional practice and ongoing learning. Her work has included facilitating diversity, equity, and inclusion conversations, applying an equity lens to programs and services, and helping organizations identify and address barriers to access and opportunity for their constituents. As an active member of The Cathedral of the Incarnation, she has participated in faith-based dialogue on race, history, and social justice. She has also engaged in other learning programs that have deepened her understanding of how policies, institutions, and systems shape outcomes for individuals and communities.

Kara is a graduate of Harvard College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biomedical Engineering.
