Justice Mary M. Werner

DSCN1573Retired New York State Supreme Court Justice, Mary M. Werner started her career at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.  While there she served on the New York State Organized Crime Task Force and became Chief of the Family Crime Bureau. In 1991 she was appointed to the position of New York State Supreme Court Judge and was subsequently elected to that position. In 1994 she was appointed District Administrative Judge of Suffolk County.  She initiated reforms of trial case management in Suffolk County, and  started  Drug Courts in both District and Family Courts. She  opened a Children’s Room in the District Court

Currently Judge Werner is an active member of the Board of Advisors of the ENERGEIA Project at Molloy College, and an active member & participant in the OLLI Program at Stony Brook University.  She is a Founding Member and Past President of the Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association, a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Suffolk County Bar association, a  former member of the Board of Directors of the Suffolk County Bar Association and the Suffolk Academy of Law. Judge Werner is also a former member of NYS Family Violence Task Force, a former member of the Boards of the Cleary School for the Deaf and St. John’s Law School Alumni Association.

Judge Werner has received numerous awards: the Child Abuse and Family Violence Professional Award; Victim’s Information Bureau Award for Distinguished Service to Victims and Their Advocates; Awards from the Long Island Women’s Coalition, U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration, Suffolk Academy of Law Distinguished Merit Award; Education and Assistance Humanitarian Award; Certificate of Merit, Governor Mario Cuomo; Zonta Woman of the Year, American Red Cross Community Service Award; and Suffolk Hadassah Wreath Award.

Judge Werner received her Juris Doctor Degree from St. John’s Law School and her Bachelors of Arts Degree from Dowling College.
