Joan Lange - Board of DirectorDr. Lange attended Bridgewater State College, now Bridgewater State University, where she majored in English. Her graduate work in English was done at Harvard University. She completed her academic journey at Hofstra University where she was a doctoral fellow in educational administration.

She began her teaching career at North Junior High School, now North Middle School, in Brentwood, New York. After a long and successful career in Brentwood where she held various teaching and administrative roles including staff developer and curriculum coordinator, she left to assume the role of assistant superintendent in the Rockville Center School District.

In 1997 she retired. However, within a few short months she recognized not only that she did not possess the requisite skills needed for retirement, but also that there was important work left to be done. Admitting she is "a retirement failure", she returned to the field and has served with distinction as an assistant superintendent in the William Floyd School District (1998-2002), the Islip School District (2002-2006), the Brentwood School District (2007-2011), the Amityville School District.  She now serves as an assistant superintendent in the Roosevelt School District.

Dr. Lange is a recognized leader in the field of education. She has been named the Educator of the Year on three different occasions by the School Administrators Association of New York (SAANYS), the New York State Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (NYASCD), and the Long Island Black Educators Association (LIBEA). In 2015 she was an Honoree at the Suffolk County Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Commission.

Dr. Lange has been an adjunct professor at Dowling College where she was the instructor of graduate reading courses. She is a frequent presenter at superintendent's conference days and at both state and national conferences including being a keynote speaker at the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Conference. In addition she is the author of a composition series which was used for many years in the Brentwood Schools to help teachers understand how to teach writing and to help students reach their potential as writers.

In addition to long hours devoted to whichever district she serves, Dr. Lange finds time to volunteer her service to various organizations. She has served as President of the Long Island Language Arts Council, the Vice President for Instruction for the New York State English Council (NYSEC), and President of the Long Island Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (LIASCD). She currently holds the position of Historian on the Executive Board of LIASCD. She also serves as the New York State Field Director for the Horatio Alger Association and is a member of the National Scholarship Committee.
